Research Blog: Commercial Conventions

Starburst commercials usually have a lot of fictional features. The commercials emphasize the wonderful effect that the candy will have on you. This is illustrated by including lots of colors to contrast. Also, shining lights are used to imply that the candy is very powerful. They are also very heavy on the adjectives. Adjectives are used to describe a noun. Lots of commercials do this, not just Starburst. These words are used to grab the audiences’ attention. If you are watching a commercial in a restaurant, and you see a plate of steak a person would most likely say,” oh my! Look at this delicious, smoking, tender piece of steak”. Just listening to this would make your mouth water. You then start to ponder. You think,” Do I really need this product?” Now you have been drawn in. Starburst does the exact same thing. Starburst just uses a different type of adjectives. They go a different path than many others in the industry, this is because they have a different theme. Using words like tender, smoking hot, or savory wouldn’t attract you to a candy commercial. Another thing they tend to do is always have a bright and lively setting. This makes the vibe more happy and peaceful. Everyone loves a good commercial that really drags you in, makes you feel like you need the product. That's why it's important to use the right conventions for your commercial.
